Badly binned batteries can start fires

In recent years, Glasgow has experienced a number of battery-related bin lorry fires. GCC has recently had to deal with two fires inside RCVs which were likely caused by batteries or electrical items which contain lithium-ion batteries, deposited in domestic general waste or recycling bins.

These fires occurred on 12 August in the City Centre (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czxq2q0d2w1o) and 25 August in the Kelvindale area of the west end. These incidents were so severe that waste had to be unloaded onto the street in order that Scottish Fire and Rescue Service could safely tackle the blazes. Thanks to the swift actions of Council staff and emergency responders, no one was injured, but these incidents highlight the very real dangers of disposing of batteries incorrectly.
